HOW DID I CONTRIBUTE?

  1. Conducted primary and secondary research on the topic.
  2. Design and Implemented the installation.
  3. Built the installation with wood, acrylic and electronics.
  4. Developed the Processing 3 code which would integrate with the sensors to perform the task.

Collaborated with 3 other designers.

Process

IN A NUTSHELL

Bloom project is an interactive art installation for an event from scratch that camouflages with the background until someone passes by. When someone walks past the installation, the flowers come alive and bloom into different colors on the bed of leaves.

How does it work?

There are 9 ultrasonic proximity sensors and 10 flowers. As soon as there is a person within the range of the sensor, it detects them. The sensors are controlled using an Arduino. The arduino is coded to rotate the motor when the sensor detects someone in proximity. The motor starts to spi, the petals open on to form vibrantly colored flowers. They stay open for a couple of seconds and the motor then spins in the opposite direction and the flower shuts back.

The installation was mounted at one of the entrances of the Symbiosis International University during the annual college fest DZMA 2016.

VISUAL DESIGN

The final installation was places at the corridor of Symbiosis International University so it would dance and live with everytime people passed by it.
